The Germany Close Up Fellowship: A Student Program in Affiliation with Hebrew Union College – The Jewish Institute of Religion, May 22nd – June 2nd, 2013
Background
Established in October 2007, Germany Close Up – American Jews Meet Modern Germany is an initiative created to enrich transatlantic dialogue and provide Jewish American students and young professionals in their twenties and early thirties with an opportunity to experience modern Germany up close and personally. A generous government scholarship (a part of the ERP Special Assets of the German Ministry for Economics and Technology) covers more than two thirds of participation costs, which leaves a participation fee of $780 per person. At the same time, Germany Close Up is an independent body regarding the organization and contents of its programs. The purpose of the program is to allow participants to gain their own perspective on Germany through individual experience.
Focus
The trips are designed to expose participants to a range of aspects that make up modern Germany, with both the past and present in focus. Every Germany Close Up trip includes a number of activities, tours, and meetings. Each group meets with German opinion makers from academia and across the political spectrum, as well as representatives of grassroots movements and German contemporaries. All trips cover issues related to Germany’s reflection on its past and its efforts to deal with the memory of the Holocaust and the Nazi horror up to this very day. They also consider its transformation in the last 60 years into a modern, reunified, and democratic country in the heart of the European Union, home to the third-fastest growing Jewish community worldwide. Observing Shabbat and keeping a kosher diet are both possible on all GCU trips.
This three credit history elective course explores the long, complex and often painful history shared by Germans, both Jews and non-Jews. By looking at diverse literary, philosophical, historical, and religious sources, we will explore the changing terrain of identity politics in national, cultural and theological realms. Several days of close study on campus in Los Angeles (made available to students on all campuses through cross campus e-Learning classrooms) will be followed by an intense 12-day study tour of Germany. Our discussions before departure will investigate the background and controversies of those places we will visit and will prepare students for conversations with Germans of different backgrounds (rabbinical students, university personnel, tour guides, politicians, community leaders) who are in the process of determining their shared future. All of our preparation will create an awareness of contemporary German Jewish life. The class is open to students in all programs on the LA, Cincinnati, and NY campuses. Assessment will include full participation in all aspects of the course, the keeping of an intellectual journal while abroad, and several short papers designed to help students prepare for the various aspects of our time in Germany.
